Augusta Correctional Center Conducts Contraband Interdiction

Visitors, staff and vehicles searched during inmate visitation

RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Corrections (VDOC) conducted a successful contraband interdiction at Augusta Correctional Center in Augusta County on Saturday, April 12, 2008, to enhance security.

“We are committed to serving the public, providing a secure facility for those incarcerated, and a safe environment for our staff and community,” Warden Dan Braxton observed. “The level of cooperation and professionalism exhibited between agencies and the officers present fills me with pride and confidence that we will continue to achieve our mission. I commend and thank all who participated.”

Agencies participating in the interdictions included the VDOC Western Region Drug Interdiction Team, the VDOC Office of the Inspector General, Augusta Correctional Center staff, Virginia State Police, and Augusta County Sheriffs’ Office.

During the interdiction fifty-four (54) vehicles were searched and ninety-eight (98) visitors and employees were scanned. Three persons were apprehended for felony possession of controlled substances, one person was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, three vehicles were found to contain weapons, two persons were identified driving on suspended driver’s licenses, three citations were issued for traffic infractions, and nine persons were denied visitation for DOC security related policy violations.

The VDOC periodically conducts similar operations at its prison facilities around the state. Such operations are normally conducted on weekends and state holidays when the facility allows inmate visitation.
