RICHMOND – Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) Director Gene Johnson announced today the appointment of George M. Hinkle as Warden of Greensville Correctional Center (GCC) in Jarratt, Virginia, effective February 25, 2003.
"George has spent his entire professional career in Virginia corrections," said Director Johnson. "With his vast experience, George is well known for his professionalism and leadership ability. I'm sure DOC employees around the state join me in congratulating him."
Hinkle, 48, began his career in 1977 as a Correctional Officer at the Virginia State Penitentiary in Richmond. His experience includes Rehabilitation Counselor at Caroline Correctional Field Unit, Treatment Program Supervisor at the Virginia State Penitentiary, Assistant Warden at Mecklenburg Correctional Center, and Warden at Haynesville Correctional Center. He has held the position of Warden at Augusta Correctional Center since June 2001. Hinkle is a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Law Enforcement and Public Administration.
Opened in 1990, GCC is a security Level 3 (medium) male facility and Virginia's largest state prison with an average daily inmate population of 3,000. It has one of the largest inmate infirmaries in the state and is also home to Virginia's execution chamber.
Hinkle replaces Warden Dave Garraghty who announced his retirement in 2002.
