Virginia Department of Corrections Receives CIO 100 Award

RICHMOND – Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) Director Gene Johnson announced today that the Department is a winner of the prestigious CIO 100 award from CIO Magazine. Each year the CIO 100 Award recognizes 100 organizations around the world that excel in positive business performance through resourceful Information Technologies (IT) management and practices. This year, CIO honors companies that demonstrate the resourceful use of technology and related assets in a tough economic climate.

“I am very proud of our Center for Information Technologies because they have had to support the largest state agency in the Commonwealth with very meager resources,” says Gene Johnson, Corrections Director. “We live in a technology age, and Governor Mark Warner’s Technology Reform Initiative will maximize our capabilities as a Commonwealth to save scarce resources while expanding technology opportunities. Getting this award demonstrates the Department’s technology staff is in tune with the new reform. They have been able to improve our operations in spite of tough budgetary times.”

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Corrections, Dee Pisciella, knows that this recognition comes from many long hours and extra efforts of her staff. “Technology is an expensive business,” said Pisciella. “Our success comes from the professional determination of the staff and the strong support of the Department. We are tremendously excited to be recognized among top international corporate leaders as a “resourceful IT shop.”

“This year’s CIO 100 award recipients are being honored because their companies have demonstrated resourceful use of IT systems, staff and budgets,” says Abbie Lundberg, Editor in Chief, CIO Magazine. “Maximizing return on investment is a priority when times are tight, and these companies excel in generating greater value from limited resources.”

Other recognized companies in this year’s competition include such well known firms as 7-Eleven, Inc., Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, JP Morgan Chase, Hershey Foods Corporation, Dell Computers, Land’s End, Inc. and QVC, Inc., etc. The Virginia Department of Corrections will receive its award officially on August 20, 2003.
