RICHMOND – Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) inmates will raise awareness and money for Virginia’s Uninsured Medical Catastrophe Fund the weekend of April 7th. Substance Abuse Therapeutic Community inmates and their visiting family members across the state will participate through a variety of projects and programs.
Because many Virginian’s have no medical insurance, this fund has been established to benefit individuals facing catastrophic medical treatment. And because daylight savings time begins this weekend, Sunday, April 7th has been recognized by Governor Warner as Virginia’s Uninsured Medical Catastrophe Fund Day, “Turning Darkness Into Light.”
“The Virginia Department of Corrections realizes that inmates and their family members are potentially among the many medically uninsured members of our society,” said DOC Director Ron Angelone. “It’s gratifying that inmates have been eager to educate and involve themselves, their families, and DOC staff members in this new and potentially life-saving program.”
Participating DOC facilities with Substance Abuse Therapeutic Communities are Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, Botetourt Correctional Unit, Indian Creek Correctional Center, Pocahontas Correctional Unit, Lawrenceville Correctional Center, Brunswick Work Center, Greensville Work Center and Virginia Correctional Center for Women. Inmate projects include building and selling birdhouses, car washes, carnivals, bingo games, walk-a-thons, aluminum recycling, and poster and photo contests and sales.
