Indian Creek Correctional Center Dedicates Smith Hall Therapeutic Program Building

RICHMOND – Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) Director Ron Angelone today officially dedicated Smith Hall Therapeutic Program Building at Indian Creek Correctional Center in memory of former Warden James A. Smith, Jr.

Smith served as Warden of Indian Creek from August 1996 until his death in January 1998. Prior to his position as Warden, Smith was the Regional Administrator for the Eastern Region of DOC when construction of Indian Creek began. As both the Regional Administrator and then as the Chief of Operations for the Division of Institutions, Smith continued to oversee the development and evolution of Indian Creek.

“Warden Smith was a well-respected member of this Department for many years,” said Director Angelone. “We recognize and honor him today for his service to the Commonwealth through his commitment to the establishment of Indian Creek for the treatment of substance abuse and addiction.”

Indian Creek Correctional Center is one of the largest secure substance abuse therapeutic communities in the nation. The facility teaches and equips inmates with an alternative lifestyle in a safe, secure environment and enables them to return to society as responsible, productive citizens free of addictive and criminal behavior.

Construction of the Programs Building at Indian Creek began in late 1996 and was completed in August 1998. The building houses classrooms and meeting spaces for inmates engaged in the therapeutic process as well as office space for the clinical staff and supervisors. Weekday activity in the building may involve as many as 650 inmates engaged in various phases of the curriculum in 13 classrooms and an auditorium.
