Virginia Board of Corrections Certifies Wallens Ridge State Prison
- 100% of Standards Met for State Correctional Facilities -

RICHMOND – Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC) Director Ron Angelone announced today that Wallens Ridge State Prison in Wise County has received unconditional certification from the Virginia Board of Corrections based upon 100 percent compliance with State Correctional Facilities standards.

Wallens Ridge received certification based upon an excellent performance level of compliance. The facility met 218 operational standards for institutions. Of the 218, 46 standards related specifically to life, health and safety issues.

“Warden Stan Young and his staff have done a terrific job and they should be extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Director Angelone. “It’s not often that a brand new facility receives 100 percent certification, especially on its first attempt. Proof again that Virginia’s super-max prisons are constitutional and practice sound correctional policies.”

Director Angelone, along with Board of Corrections Chairman Fred Finkbeiner and several Board members, visited Wallens Ridge yesterday to present Warden Stan Young and staff with a certificate recognizing this accomplishment
