Duties
Corrections Officers supervise inmates and are responsible for custody, control, discipline
and escape prevention duties. This involves supervision of inmate movement; checking visitors
and inmates for contraband; maintaining security at gates and entrances; reporting on inmate
conduct and work performance; and supervising inmate work activities.
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent, physically and mentally fit to perform the essential
job functions; good communications skills (oral and written) and good interpersonal skills;
clean record (no felony or domestic violence convictions); ability to read and comprehend
post orders, policies and procedures; ability to prepare legible written documentation and
correspondence of activities within security; leadership ability; honest, reliable, work well
with others, assertive, team player, eager to learn and willing to work hard.a
Essential Functions
- Maintain custody of inmates, provide control of inmate movement, and security of the institution
- Work all posts, shifts and schedules, including required overtime to ensure staff coverage for security posts and maintenance of institutional security
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license
- Complete all required training, including certifying with lethal weapons
- Complete specific training for and exposure to oleoresin capsic (AKA: pepper spray), including decontamination procedures
- Intervene in situations, physically or verbally, when an inmate is out of control or when there is a threat to the security of the institution, the safety of the staff or inmate, or threat to the property of the Commonwealth, staff, or inmates
- Exercise good judgment regarding the appropriate use of physical or lethal force to maintain security
- Constantly be alert to observe inmate behavior and/or external threats to security
- Read and comprehend post orders, policies, and procedures
- Prepare legible written documentation and correspondence of activities within security
- Communicate with inmates and staff regarding security issues/programs
