Employment and Training

The Virginia Department of Corrections offers varied employment opportunities in almost every geographic area of the State. To visualize the opportunities think a correctional facility as a small city. We must have many of the services that are needed to support an entire community.

These services include, but are not limited to security, medical, food service, buildings and grounds, business and accounting, probation and parole services, budget and finance, information systems, treatment, electrical and electronics services, office support, management support, water systems and enterprises.

Drug Free Workplace

It is the Commonwealth's and the Department of Corrections' objective to establish and maintain a work environment free from the adverse effects of alcohol and other drugs. The productivity of the Commonwealth's work force, one of the Department's greatest assets, could be undermined by the effects of alcohol and other other drugs in the workplace. The adverse effects of alcohol and other drugs create a serious threat to the welfare of fellow employees and to Virginia's citizens. The Department, therefore, has adopted policies and procedures to address alcohol and other drug problems in the public work force and instituted drug and alcohol testing procedures to minimize the potential for undetected problems.

Safety In the Workplace

The safety of employees and protection of the public's safety are of paramount concern to the Department. The Department requires background investigations, pre-employment drug testing, random employee drug testing and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing to ensure employees are physically and mentally able and alert in the performance of their duties.

Staff Training

The training of the Department’s employees is a primary focus. This is coordinated through the Academy for Staff Development which is a modern full service training facility offering over 300 courses. The physical facilities consist of five buildings (total of 126,000 square feet) on the Academy campus and a state-of-the-art firearms range located on the grounds of a correctional facility adjacent to the Academy. The facilities on the main campus include the administration/classroom building, a physical skills training center, a 200 bed residence hall, a dining hall and a maintenance shop. For more information see the Academy for Staff Development.
