Department of Corrections and the Director of Corrections

The Department’s Mission Statement, adopted by the Board in February, 1998, states:
The Department of Corrections enhances public safety by controlling and supervising sentenced offenders in a humane, cost-efficient manner, consistent with sound correctional principles and constitutional standards.

The Director is guided specifically by Title 53.1, Article 3, of the Code of Virginia. (see on external website - all Code sections referencing the Board of Corrections)

REF: 53.1-8; 53.1-9; 53.1-10; 53.1-11; 53.1-12; 53.1-15; 53.1-16; 53.1-17

While the Board has no say-so over the day-to-day operations of the Department of Corrections, there are Board Policies, Regulations, and Standards which guide the Department in developing Departmental Procedures, which enable operations of both state and community correctional units to function smoothly and to ensure the protection of inmate's rights.
